Classic American Beef Sandwich (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ For the Filling

01 - 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80% lean)
02 - 1 small onion, finely chopped
03 - 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
04 - 2 garlic cloves, minced

→ For the Sauce

05 - 3/4 cup ketchup
06 - 1/4 cup tomato paste
07 - 1/4 cup water
08 - 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
09 - 2 tbsp brown sugar
10 - 1 tbsp yellow mustard
11 - 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
12 - 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
13 - 1/4 tsp chili powder (optional, for heat)
14 - Salt and pepper, to taste

→ For Serving

15 - 4 hamburger buns, toasted
16 - Optional toppings: shredded cheese, pickles, or coleslaw

# Instructions:

01 - In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. When the beef is about halfway browned, add the onion, bell pepper (if using), and garlic. Cook until the beef is fully browned and the vegetables are softened, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
02 - In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well to combine, ensuring the beef is fully coated in the sauce.
03 - Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and flavors meld together. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
04 - Spoon the beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns. Add optional toppings if desired and serve immediately.

# Notes:

01 - The filling can be prepared a day in advance and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave.
02 - For a slow cooker option, brown the beef and veggies first, then transfer everything (including the sauce ingredients) to a slow cooker. Cook on low for 4–6 hours.
03 - Use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef for a leaner Sloppy Joe.
