Mix your sugar, evaporated milk, butter, and salt in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring the whole time, until it starts to boil.

Stir in your chocolate chips until they're completely melted and everything's nice and smooth.

Take the pan off the heat and quickly stir in your marshmallows, vanilla, and nuts if you're using them. Keep stirring until those marshmallows are completely melted.

Pour everything into a greased 8-inch square pan and smooth out the top with a spatula.

Leave it at room temperature until it's firm enough to cut into squares.
